Automation Expertise: AIM’s key competitive advantage is its expertise in designing and deploying highly automated, modular manufacturing cells. While many injection molders utilize various levels of automation equipment, it is generally applied only to long-run programs. In contrast, AIM automates nearly every product and process flowing through its facility utilizing in-house modular designs and customized equipment.
Reshoring of Supply Chains: AIM’s focus and execution of its automation strategy makes it well positioned to benefit from OEM reshoring of supply chains. The Company’s minimal reliance on direct labor provides AIM with the opportunity to offer more favorable pricing and quality than their competitors.
Transfer Tool Expertise: AIM’s automation strategy provides an especially compelling value proposition for customers looking to transfer problem projects from incumbent molders and the Company has developed an extensive program around qualifying and onboarding these projects. Winning transfer tool work provides immediate production revenue without the upfront design time and initial lower volume runs.
Scalable Capacity: AIM is currently running at 25-30% capacity as management has consistently and opportunistically overinvested in state-of-the-art equipment. As a result, we believe AIM is well positioned to drive exceptional operating leverage, as management feels the Company can more than double revenues without significant investment in HR or additional equipment.
Unrealized Upside: The Company has not had a full-time sales representative for over two years and has instead relied on a third party to make cold calls on their behalf. Additionally, AIM has not employed a robust traditional or digital marketing strategy.
MCM Experience: We believe we can bring significantly more than capital to AIM and drive outsized organic growth. Greg Ott, who will be Chairman of AIM, led our management of Performance Plastics, an injection molder of highly engineered thermoplastic components similarly situated to AIM at the time of our investment in terms of technical proficiency and operational excellence, but lacking a sales and marketing strategy.
